Welcome to Computerspeak, a newsletter focused on AI and emerging technologies.

The newsletter will be published weekly, providing a selection of the most interesting media articles about AI alongside original commentary or short interviews with people working in the tech industry or dedicate particular issues to diving deeper on specifics like large language models, computer vision or the metaverse.

Who am I?

I’ve been part of the technology industry for more than a decade. I studied electrical engineering and computer science at university, then worked as an engineer designing chips for computer vision, mobile and embedded applications at companies such as Arm, Siemens, and Xperi.

But I always knew I wanted to do more than engineering. I was passionate about understanding how things work and kept looking for ways to share what I’ve learned with others.

So, in 2012, I ventured outside of my comfort zone and got a job in technology communications—and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work alongside the smartest people in the tech industry at companies such as Imagination Technologies, Ocado, Meta and NetEase, and saw emerging technologies starting to shape the world we live in.

I’m hoping to use this newsletter to keep track of new breakthroughs in AI and other emerging technologies, and share them with you every week.

Why subscribe?

We’re at the start of an exponential curve for AI development and my goal is to create a space where I can highlight nuanced press coverage and public conversations about AI and related emerging technologies. I also want to talk openly about the challenges facing the technology industry as we race to develop more powerful AI technologies and figure out how they will change the internet.

I plan to use my background in technology PR to share with you snippets of enlightening conversations with AI researchers, journalists, policymakers and critics, aiming to draw on diverse expert voices from academia, civil society, government, and industry. By sharing these different perspectives, my hope is that I will be able to provide thoughtful, inclusive and constructive communication on the societal impact of AI.

Disclosures

I’m writing this newsletter to express my own opinions and thoughts on artificial intelligence and other emerging tech, and not those of my employers. However, I feel it’s important to be transparent about the work I do because, at times, the information I come across while doing my job is very likely to influence my personal opinions:

  • I’ve been working as a head of corporate affairs and policy for Synthesia since December 2023. Before that, I worked for global tech companies such as NetEase, Meta, Ocado and Arm.

  • I’ve been an advisor to the Provost’s Office at MBZUAI since December 2023.

  • I’m an investor in FYPM.

  • I hold stocks in Meta as a result of RSUs that vested while I worked there as a head of innovation communications between August 2018 and October 2022.

  • My brother works for a German industrial technology company but our personal affairs and incomes are separate, and his work does not touch on AI or other emerging technologies. No one else in my immediate family works in the technology industry.

  • I have a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) plan that invests in a wide range of stocks, but it’s managed by Parmenion and I don’t make company-specific decisions for where the pension plan invests.
